Silver price per ounce in 2026

As I write this in October 2026, the silver price per troy ounce is $57.69. If that number looks shocking, it should: silver spent four decades below its 1980 nominal peak, finally broke the $50 barrier in October 2025, and has traded in record territory ever since. I have been covering precious metals for more than 20 years, and I can tell you the phone calls I get about silver today sound nothing like the sleepy market of the 2010s. Below is what an ounce of silver is worth right now, why the troy ounce matters, and what to watch if you are buying or selling.

Troy Ounce vs Regular Ounce: Do Not Mix Them Up

Silver, like gold, is priced in troy ounces. A troy ounce weighs 31.1035 grams, while the regular (avoirdupois) ounce on your kitchen scale weighs 28.3495 grams. That makes a regular ounce of silver worth about $52.58 at today's spot, roughly 9% less than the quoted price. Sellers get burned by this constantly: if a buyer quotes you a price per ounce, always confirm which ounce they mean. The difference on a large lot of silverware or bullion adds up fast.

Why Silver Is at Record Levels

Silver finally took out the $50 level on October 10, 2025, its first visit to that price since January 1980. A few forces got it there. Industrial demand keeps setting records, led by solar panels and electronics, with total demand running around 1.16 billion ounces a year according to the Silver Institute. Investment demand followed gold's historic run. And the gold-to-silver ratio, which spent years stretched above 80, has compressed to roughly 72, meaning silver has been outpacing even gold's impressive gains. None of this guarantees the run continues, and silver is famously more volatile than gold in both directions.

Buying and Selling at Today's Prices

On the buy side, premiums matter more than ever at these price levels. Government coins like American Silver Eagles carry the highest premiums, while generic rounds and bars track closer to spot; my rundown of the top silver coins for investors covers the tradeoffs, and dealers like SD Bullion are known for tight pricing on bulk silver. On the sell side, expect offers between 90% and 98% of melt value depending on the product and the buyer. I walk through the whole process in my guide to selling gold and silver. And if you are weighing smaller pieces like jewelry or flatware, the math works better per gram: see my companion piece on the silver price per gram.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is one ounce of silver worth today?

As of this October 2026 update, one troy ounce of silver is worth $57.69 at spot. A regular (avoirdupois) ounce is worth about $52.58 because it weighs roughly 9% less than a troy ounce.

Is silver at an all-time high?

Silver broke above $50 per ounce in October 2025 for the first time since January 1980, taking out its long-standing nominal records, and has traded in record territory since. Adjusted for inflation, the 1980 spike would still be far higher in today's dollars.

Why is the price I am offered lower than spot?

Spot is the wholesale paper-market price. Dealers and refiners build in a margin, so sell offers typically land between 90% and 98% of melt value for recognizable bullion, and lower for items that need refining like sterling flatware.

What is the gold-to-silver ratio right now?

With gold at $4,184.14 and silver at $57.69, the ratio is about 72 to 1. The historical average over the past few decades sits in the 60s to 70s, so silver is no longer the deeply discounted metal it was when the ratio stretched past 80.

Can I hold silver in a retirement account?

Yes. The IRS allows silver of 99.9% purity in a self-directed precious metals IRA, which covers American Silver Eagles and most bullion bars and rounds from accredited refiners. The metal must be stored at an approved depository.
