Silver price per gram in 2026

As of this October 2026 update, the silver price per gram is $1.85 for pure (.999) silver, based on a spot price of $57.69 per troy ounce. Sterling silver, the 92.5% alloy used in most jewelry and flatware, is worth about $1.72 per gram in melt value. After two decades of writing about precious metals, I can say the per-gram number has never mattered more: with silver in record territory, the drawer of old sterling most families own is suddenly worth real money, and knowing the math keeps you from getting lowballed.

Silver Price Per Gram Today

One troy ounce contains 31.1035 grams, so the per-gram value of pure silver is simply the spot price divided by 31.1035. Here is what that produces at today's spot, for both pure and sterling silver:

WeightPure Silver (.999)Sterling (.925)
1 gram$1.85$1.72
1 pennyweight (1.555 g)$2.88$2.67
10 grams$18.55$17.16
50 grams$92.74$85.78
100 grams$185.48$171.57
1 troy ounce (31.1 g)$57.69$53.36

Sterling, 925, Coin Silver: Reading the Hallmarks

Most silver you will encounter at home is not pure. The common hallmarks tell you the purity, and the purity sets the per-gram value. A 925 or Sterling stamp means 92.5% silver ($1.72 per gram today). 900 or “coin silver,” common on pre-1965 US coins, means 90% ($1.67 per gram). 800 silver, found on older European pieces, is 80% ($1.48 per gram). And 999 or “fine silver” is the pure stuff at $1.85 per gram. Watch out for pieces marked EPNS, “silver plate,” or “nickel silver”: those contain little or no actual silver and have essentially no melt value. If a piece has no hallmark at all, have it tested before accepting any offer.

Getting a Fair Price for Your Silver

Here is the reality of selling small-lot silver: buyers of sterling flatware and jewelry typically pay 70% to 90% of melt value, because sterling has to be refined before it re-enters the market. Recognizable bullion like Silver Britannias sells much closer to spot. Weigh your items yourself on a gram scale, do the math from the table above, and get at least two or three offers before you sell. The pawn-shop quote is almost never the best one, and the precious metals scams I see most often start with a buyer who refuses to break down their price per gram. For honest benchmarks, online dealers like Silver Gold Bull publish their buyback prices openly.

Silver as an Investment, Beyond the Drawer

If running the per-gram math has you thinking about silver as a serious holding, you have options beyond collecting sterling: bullion coins and bars bought for home storage, or IRA-eligible silver held in a tax-advantaged retirement account. My silver IRA guide covers the purity rules (99.9% minimum), storage requirements, and which products qualify. At today's prices, even a modest allocation adds up quickly, so buy deliberately and compare premiums.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a gram of silver worth today?

As of this October 2026 update, pure silver is worth $1.85 per gram and sterling (925) silver about $1.72 per gram in melt value, based on a spot price of $57.69 per troy ounce.

What is 925 silver worth per gram?

925 (sterling) silver is 92.5% pure, so multiply the pure per-gram value by 0.925. Today that works out to about $1.72 per gram, though buyers of scrap sterling typically pay 70% to 90% of that melt figure.

How do I calculate the value of my sterling flatware?

Weigh the pieces in grams (excluding weighted handles and stainless blades, which contain no silver), multiply by 0.925, then by the current per-gram spot value. A 600-gram set of sterling forks holds about 555 grams of pure silver, roughly $1,029 at today's prices.

Why is silver suddenly worth so much?

Silver broke above $50 per ounce in October 2025 for the first time since 1980, driven by record industrial demand from solar and electronics plus investment demand that followed gold's historic run. Silver remains more volatile than gold, so prices can move sharply in both directions.

Is silver jewelry worth selling by the gram?

Often, yes, but check for maker value first. Pieces from recognized designers or antique silver can be worth far more to a specialty buyer than their weight in metal. Melt value is the floor, not the ceiling.
