22k sits in a strange spot in the American gold conversation: almost nobody here buys 22k jewelry, yet millions of Americans own 22k gold without realizing it, because American Gold Eagles and South African Krugerrands are both struck in 22k. After two decades covering this market I still meet coin owners who think their Eagles are pure gold. The number that matters: at today’s spot price of $4,158.80 per troy ounce (mid-October 2026), 22k gold is worth about $122.57 per gram in metal content.

Gold Eagles are the one 22k exception the IRS allows in retirement accounts. Noble Gold’s free 2026 kit explains how that works end to end.

22K Gold Value Today

22k gold is 91.67% pure (22 of 24 parts), marked 916 in most of the world. At the current $4,158.80 spot price:

Unit or item Pure gold content 22K melt value
1 gram 0.9167 g $122.57
1 pennyweight (dwt) 1.426 g $190.62
8 gram bangle 7.33 g $980.56
1 troy ounce 28.51 g $3,812.37
Gold Eagle (1 oz, 33.93 g gross) 31.10 g (1 ozt) $4,158.80

Note the Gold Eagle quirk: it weighs more than a troy ounce gross because the mint adds alloy on top of a full ounce of gold, so a 22k Eagle still contains exactly one troy ounce of pure metal. For any other weight, our gold calculator loads the live spot price and has a 22k preset.

Where 22K Shows Up

Three places, mostly. First, bullion coins: the American Gold Eagle and Krugerrand are 22k by design, a durability choice dating to circulating gold coinage; the historic Double Eagles used a similar 90% standard. Second, South Asian and Middle Eastern jewelry, where 22k (916 hallmark) is the default for wedding gold; if you inherited gold from family in India or the Gulf, it is very likely 22k. Third, some premium chains and coins from East Asia. Purity sits just below 24k gold, trading a little softness for real-world wearability.

Selling 22K: Jewelry vs Coins

These are different markets. 22k jewelry sells like scrap: expect 75% to 90% of melt from a good buyer, and get multiple quotes because 22k’s high purity makes lowballing especially expensive for you. 22k bullion coins sell like bullion: recognized coins such as Eagles and Krugerrands routinely fetch spot or a small premium above it, which is why you should never let a scrap buyer price a bullion coin by weight. 22K Gold Price FAQ

How much is 22k gold worth per gram today?
About $122.57 per gram in melt value at the current $4,158.80 spot price (mid-October 2026). Jewelry buyers typically pay 75% to 90% of that; recognized 22k bullion coins trade at or above full melt.
What does 916 stamped on gold mean?
916 means 91.6% pure, the fineness marking for 22k gold. It is the standard hallmark on South Asian and Middle Eastern jewelry.
Are American Gold Eagles really 22k?
Yes. Eagles are 22k (91.67% gold) but contain a full troy ounce of pure gold because the coin weighs 33.93 grams gross. You lose nothing in gold content to the alloy.
Is 22k gold jewelry a good way to own gold?
Better than lower karats, since more of what you pay for is metal, but retail markups still apply. For investment-first buying, bullion coins and bars get you closer to melt value.
Can 22k gold go in a gold IRA?
Only one 22k item qualifies: the American Gold Eagle, which has a specific exemption from the 99.5% purity rule. 22k jewelry and other 22k coins are not eligible.
