I have appraised and written about gold jewelry for over twenty years, and 14k is the karat I get asked about most, because it is what most American jewelry actually is. The short answer: with spot gold at $4,099.04 per troy ounce as I write this in mid-October 2026, 14k gold is worth about $76.87 per gram in pure metal content. What a buyer actually hands you will be a percentage of that, and this page shows you how to work out both numbers.

14K Gold Value Today

14k gold is 58.3% pure (14 of 24 parts), so every gram of 14k contains 0.5833 grams of fine gold. Multiply that by the spot price and you get the melt value. Here is the math at today’s $4,099.04 spot price:

Unit Pure gold content 14K melt value
1 gram 0.5833 g $76.87
1 pennyweight (dwt) 0.907 g $119.55
1 troy ounce 18.14 g $2,390.97
5 grams (small ring) 2.92 g $384.36
10 grams (chain) 5.83 g $768.71
20 grams (heavy bracelet) 11.67 g $1,537.43

What Buyers Actually Pay for 14K Gold

Melt value is the ceiling, not the offer. In my experience selling test pieces to dealers over the years, reputable gold buyers pay roughly 70% to 90% of melt for 14k jewelry, pawn shops often less, and mail-in operations vary wildly. On a 10 gram 14k chain with a melt value of $768.71, a fair offer today sits around $614.97. If someone quotes you a flat number, divide it by the melt value to see the percentage they are really offering, and do not be shy about walking out. How to Identify 14K Gold

Look for the hallmark: American 14k pieces are stamped 14K or 585 (the European fineness marking, 58.5%). A piece marked 14KGP or 14K HGE is gold plated and worth only a tiny fraction of solid 14k. If there is no stamp, a jeweler can test it in minutes, or you can weigh it and use a magnet first: gold is not magnetic, so anything that sticks is not solid gold.

Why 14K Instead of Pure Gold?

Pure 24k gold is soft enough to scratch with a fingernail, so jewelers alloy it with copper, silver, zinc and nickel for durability. 14k hits the sweet spot between gold content and toughness, which is why it dominates engagement rings and everyday jewelry in the US. The tradeoff when selling: you are paid for the 58.3% of the piece that is gold, not the alloy. If you are comparing karats, our 18k gold price guide runs the same math one step up the purity ladder. The benchmark price itself is set twice daily in the LBMA Gold Price auction.

14K Gold Price FAQ

How much is 14k gold worth per gram right now?
About $76.87 per gram in melt value at the current $4,099.04 spot price (mid-October 2026). Expect a buyer to offer 70% to 90% of that figure.
What does the 585 stamp mean?
585 is the fineness marking for 14k gold: 58.5% pure. It is the same purity standard as the 14K stamp, just written the European way.
How much is a 14k gold ring worth?
A typical 14k ring weighs 3 to 7 grams. At today’s prices that is roughly $230.61 to $538.10 in melt value, minus any stones, which are weighed separately.
Do pawn shops pay full melt value for 14k gold?
Rarely. Pawn shops typically offer 50% to 70% of melt. Dedicated gold buyers and coin shops usually pay more, which is why it pays to get two or three quotes.
Is 14k gold a good investment?
As jewelry, you pay retail markups far above metal value, so it is a poor pure investment. If your goal is gold exposure, bullion coins and bars carry much smaller premiums, and IRA-eligible gold must be 99.5% pure anyway.
